What is Jewellery? What is its Purpose?
Apparently rather obvious questions, but worth exploring, since there is a dynamic quality to jewellery which is unique to this art-form.
Whatever its form or material, the purpose of jewellery is to enhance and articulate with the body; to make a statement; to represent an emotion; to be political - considering recycling, for example; to represent some aspect of the wearer. The form can range from severe and sculptural to rich and textural and encompass any materials - gold, silver, paper, steel, found objects, photos, cloth, and plastics - that won't mark skin or clothing. It can range from representational and semi-abstract to abstract.
Contemporary jewellery has the same characteristics prevalent in other great art-forms. It relies on - originality; innovation and experimentation in materials; ideas and techniques. At the same time it has a long and distinguished history, going back to the ancient Egyptians and beyond, and a very solid, traditional approach to technique and craft skills that has served it well over the years.
