About MK

Michael Kay was born in Paisley in 1948 and educated at Paisley Grammar School, Lenzie Academy and Dunfermline High School. He trained in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design at Edinburgh College of Art between 1966 and 1970, and was awarded a Helen Rose Bequest Travelling Scholarship on graduation.

He gained his teaching certificate at Moray House in 1971. While his professional life has been in secondary Art & Design education, rising to Principal Teacher of Art & Design at Monifieth High School in 1993, Michael has also had seventeen year's experience teaching jewellery design and construction to evening class students as well as leading the silversmithing section of the Dollar Summer School for five years. For many years he has been on the W.R.I. circuit, giving lecture and demonstrations.

He has also been in business continuously, albeit in a small way, selling through a variety of galleries and outlets, the latest of which have been the White Gallery, Dundee, and Galleria Luti, Callander, as well as to many private clients.

Larger scale pieces have included trophies for Stirling University, the Merasheen Society, the Rotary Club, Monifieth High School and Cortachy Curling Club. Ecclesiastical silver has been produced for the Episcopal Church at St. Saviour's, Bridge of Allan and Holy Trinity, Dunfermline.

In smaller-scale silversmithing he designs and makes boxes, knives, spoons and napkin rings. He also designs and makes wedding and engagement rings in 9 and 18 carat gold and other types of jewellery in both silver and gold. Both precious and semi-precious stones feature in his work.
