Michael was born in Paisley in 1948. He was educated at Paisley Grammar School, Lenzie Academy and Dunfermline High School. He attended Edinburgh College of Art between 1966 and 1970, gaining a Diploma in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design. He was awarded a Helen Rose Bequest Travelling Scholarship which took him to Finland in August 1970. After a year at Moray House College, Michael entered secondary education. He retired from education in 2008, and since then has been concentrating on developing his silversmithing and jewellery business. In addition to his day job, Michael also had seventeen year’s experience teaching jewellery design and construction to evening class students as well as leading the silversmithing section of the Dollar Summer School for five years. For many years he has been on the S.W.R.I. circuit, giving lecture/demonstrations. In addition to the usual types of jewellery he also designs and makes wedding and engagement rings in 9 and 18 carat gold. Both precious and semi-precious stones feature in his work. Among smaller-scale silversmithing pieces he designs and makes boxes, knives and spoons, while on the larger scale he makes trophies and ecclesiastical pieces. He was a founder member of the Angus Crafts Association and has been secretary of Angus Open Studios. Angus Open Studios closed down in 2016. Although Michael has now moved away from Angus he still regularly exhibits with Ros MacDonald and Patricia Griffin at Emmock Farm, Tealing, joining with them in 2014 under the banner of ‘EFAD’ - Emmock Farm Artists and Designers to exhibit as a group at the Dundee Flower and Food Festival. As a group they now exhibit at Forth Valley Art Beat (Open Studios), Perthshire Open Studios, The Handmade Show in Perth as well as other occasional events. He is also a member of the Association for Contemporary Jewellery.
